HOW TO STOP A WANDERING MIND





So the plan is to write a post and write it so well that I get an award for the most successful writer for writing the most successful post of my time . Then I will write and produce a movie and cast Robert De Niro . And after the movie will be a huge hit all around the world , I will travel to Mars and make a movie there .  Okay , coming back to earth what I'm saying is that sometimes we want to control and plan everything and then just plan and plan and dream and dream even when we should actually you know start doing something about it . 

Our mind wanders and wanders and it actually drives us away from our goals . And most of the dreams in which our mind takes us are next-to-impossible realities . We start giving our mind our most precious asset ( our time ) to play around and go wherever it wants to . And our mind fills it up with thoughts and keeps itself busy by making up these thoughts . This is because we have what our ancestors (early humans) never had . The frontal cortex , the front part of our head which enables us to visualize things . To experience the feelings without actually experiencing them . 






Our frontal cortex can help us by making us experience success and painting  a small image of what we want to achieve which motivates us to take action towards our goal . But if we just dream and do not control our mind to get ourselves out of " just dreaming " mode and start on " doing something about it " mode then it will not be long when we actually feel guilty of the time wasted in just dreaming . " But how do I control my mind to stop thinking ? " Good question , Here's an answer . In Buddhism there is a concept called " The Two minds " according to which there are two minds in a person . One is the thinking mind and the other is the one is controlling  mind . As both of the names are self definitive , job of the controller mind ( I call the second mind the controlling mind ) is to keep an eye on the thinking mind to make sure it does not deviate from the assigned route . 




Once we understand this concept, the process of controlled thinking becomes easy .Whenever you catch yourself thinking of something that is not related to the present , try to pause and ask yourself this " what is good for me in this ? " this way , your mind starts analyzing your thoughts and keeps you away from wandering again . 

Another technique that can be used to keep your mind in the right direction is meditation . I will cover this in the coming days . It can help increase focus . It brings your blood pressure down and keeps you calm .
